sometimes is beter to use to shade stroke color than back color.
When Your "shading" is starting near: corner, other body part, border, stroke - It is good when You will use gradient - then shadow near for example "head" is darker thanks that 3D effect is deeper.
To increase 3D effect You may used light effect - You can do it just like shading - If You are shading wears (especial dark) You should using lighter wear`s color - because If You will use white color Your wears may look like glass.
